Race Report
Hutton Roof was spared another down pour after a week of very wet weather. A cautious group of villagers began erecting tents and pegging out routes on an unusually dry Friday. 215 runners entered the Senior race and the ground was soft and muddy in places from the heavy rain the night before. At the sharp end of the race there were some very fast fell runners, presumably hoping to race over the crags rather than the ‘Paps of Jura’ or the inter counties race in Southern Scotland. Rob Jebb Bingley Harriers 48:20 admitted it wasn’t really his sort of race but enjoyed the fast pace and settled for second behind an in form Morgan Donnelly 47:32 Borrowdale fell runners. Chris Steele 48:40 Borrowdale fell runners was third and Craig Roberts who performs consistently well at Hutton Roof was fourth and 1st V40 in 49:41. All in all it was quite a fast field, with the first ten runners coming home in under 55 minutes for 7miles and 1300 feet of climbing. Three V40 runners and first V50 and first V60 all finished under 57 minutes, and this on quite a blustery day! In the ladies race Kate Bailey Staffs Moorlands finished first in 58:19 from Lynne Clough first LV40 Chorley Harriers in 60:03 and Debbie Campbell Horwich RMI Harriers 61:24 third.
The villagers with route planner Simon Schofield have spent a lot of time developing three new and exciting courses for the juniors. It was good to see the youngster’s thoroughly enjoying the twisting turns through the limestone rakes and then the fast finish along the track . 42 juniors took part and if word spreads were hoping that this will increase. Arkholme school brought along a fit bunch of youngsters with Will Reid, Angus Haygarth and Thomas Atkinson in amongst the prizes.
Rosie and Scarlet Dale were jointly awarded the cup for 1st local because both girls won their respective races. Other Hutton Roof Harrier results included Hannah Willison 1st in the U8 girls Scott Chaplow 2nd in the U8 boys and Josie Chaplow 2nd in the U8 girls.
